On 5 and 6 March 2025, in the Centro Danza Matadero - CDM (Nave 11), dancer and choreographer David Coria is performing a show that reinterprets the mysterious dance epidemics that occurred in Europe in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The performance stars David Coria himself along with Florencia Oz, Marta Gálvez, Aitana Rousseau and Iván Orellana. The dancers will be accompanied by the flamenco vocal stylings of David Lagos, with Juan M. Jiménez on saxophone and Isadora Oryan on cello.
This historical phenomenon, where groups of people were trapped in a collective trance of uncontrolled dance, is resignified as a visceral form of protest against oppression and marginalisation. The artists transform the stage into a quasi-ritualistic space, where their bodies express a struggle for freedom. Through frenzied movements and dramatic pauses, the performers narrate, through their dance, a collective story that seeks to transcend norms, codes and imposed structures.
The show fuses flamenco with contemporary avant-garde, currents offering a choreographic interpretation that challenges and redefines the conventions of art and society. In addition, the show is not only a tribute to the souls who have historically found in dance a means of escape from their suffering, but also a criticism of the social order that perpetuates inequality and subjugation.
Born in Seville in 1983, David Coria is a dancer who trained in the city’s dance conservatory. He began his professional career in 1998 in the Flamenco section of the Compañía Andaluza de Danza and a year later he collaborated with Antonio El Pipa, before joining Aída Gómez’s ensemble.
After working in the best flamenco venues around Madrid such as Casa Patas, Corral de la Pacheca, Corral de la Morería and Café de Chinitas, in 2014 he produced his first solo piece: Espiral, first performed at the Jerez Festival of Spanish and Flamenco Dance, alongside flamenco dancer Ana Morales. In 2010, he was named dancer of the year by the German dance magazine TANZ, and in 2016 he won the Andalusia Academy of Performing Arts award for best male performer in flamenco dance.
