La Corte del Faraón

Carlos Aragón will be conducting this latest adaptation of the zarzuela written by Guillermo Perrín and Miguel de Palacios, with music by Vicente Lleó. This show can be seen from 29 January to 16 February at the Teatro de la Zarzuela with performances from Wednesday to Sunday.

Since it was premièred in 1910, this production has earned a lot of laughter and applause, becoming one of the funniest zarzuelas on the stage.  It tells the comical tale of the chaste José, a Hebrew who arrives in the Pharaoh’s court as a slave.  There, his chastity will be put to the test over and over again as he is pursued by the wife of General Putifar, a man of great courage but who is unable to perform marital duties as a result of a war injury, and the Pharaoh herself, who is neglected by the King of Egypt’s constant drunkenness. 

This tale was made into a film in 1985 by José Luis García Sánchez, featuring Antonio Banderas, Ana Belén and Fernando Fernán Gómez. It was also awarded the Silver Shell at the San Sebastian Film Festival in the same year.
