From 17 October to 20 April 2025, the temporary exhibition room of the Royal Collections Gallery (floor -3) will be hosting a large exhibition to mark the end of the centennial celebrations laid on to commemorate the death of the Valencian artist. An exhibition that brings together 77 pieces by the artist for the very first time, from his most famous paintings to other lesser known works and some that have never been shown in Spain before.
Organised by Spain's national heritage organisation and Light Art Exhibitions in collaboration with Fundación Museo Sorolla, this exhibition celebrates the painter's work at the close of his centenary, bringing together 77 of his most representative paintings from all stages of his career and the main themes he dealt with in his work.
Most of the works on display are his most important and highest quality pieces, but others included in this exhibition are rarely seen or have never been shown in Spain before. The pieces are on loan from institutions that house the best collections of his work, such as the Sorolla Museum and Fundación Museo Sorolla, the Hispanic Society of America, the Prado Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Asturias and the Pedro Masaveu Collection. They also come from major museums such as the Musée d’Orsay, the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection and Banco Santander and also from private national and international collections.
This exhibition explores the enduring appeal of Joaquín Sorolla’s work and the modernity of his painting that, even after a hundred years, still feels fresh and current. The catalogue also features contributions from experts on Sorolla such as Javier Barón, Carlos Reyero and Carlos G. Navarro, among others.
