Founded by Miguel Aguilera Fernández (known as Miguel Candela) in 1982, the basement or cellar of this bar has held some of the most memorable flamenco nights in Madrid, with the presence of artists of the likes of Enrique Morente, Camarón de la Isla, Paco de Lucia, Sabicas, Chocolate, El Güito, Maria Maya, Pepe Habichuela, Tomatito, Antonio Canales or Juan Ramirez, among many others.
In the early days, artists who happened to be in the establishment performed for free, as there were no contracted shows but rather a case of improvisation and whatever each person felt like doing. Since Octavio Aguilera (the founder’s brother) has run Candela (2008), the establishment has had a regular programme of flamenco performances.
Candela is divided into two areas, the bar area and the hall located in the basement, whose stage offers daily flamenco sessions and invites anyone who dares to sing, play or dance. The icing on the cake is its typical tapas and delicious sangria.
