The building occupied nowadays by Hotel Preciados was erected in 1881 on a site owned by the Descalzas Reales nuns, the first owner of which was the count of Romanones. Today, it is a completely renovated modern building located in one of the main shopping areas in the city, on Calle Preciados, on the junction of Sol / Gran Vía.
Since 2002, the hotel has managed to successfully combine the classical elegance of its 19th-century origin with 21st-century avant-garde design. Its incomparable location, right in the heart of Madrid, is flanked by Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol, and just steps away from other interesting sites such as Hapsburg Madrid, Teatro Real, Plaza de Oriente, the Royal Palace or Plaza Mayor.
Culture and shopping come together in this area which is also a prime spot for nightlife, walking distance to popular bars and nightclubs. However, those who would rather enjoy the daytime without relinquishing the advantages of being in the city centre need not worry about their comfort and rest, since all the rooms are soundproof with double glazed windows.
Hotel Preciados also has a restaurant which up until 1959 was the renowned Café Varela, meeting point of numerous great names of literature, including Emilio Carrere, until the mid-20th century. Featuring a modern and minimalist interior design, its menu is based on Mediterranean and Galician cuisine. Their specialties include Coruña-style hake with potatoes and Galician-style octopus, although their tapas, “pinchos” and set menus are served daily. On Sundays, they serve the typical Madrid stew – “cocido madrileño”.
