The Hotel Mayorazgo, just a stone’s throw from the Gran Via, is a Madrid themed hotel that welcomes its guests with a giant manila shawl emblazoned on the front of the building and members of staff dressed in traditional local dress as ‘chulapos’ and ‘chulapas’.
It has more than 200 rooms, all of which recreate places or symbolic concepts of the capital through hand painted murals and exquisite decor that represents each of the themes after which they are named and from which they take their inspiration. For example, the room known as Las Modistas (the seamstresses) has a Singer sewing machine from 1947 in a display case; El Churrero contains a genuine ‘churro’ maker dating from 1911, still perfectly preserved, … each room is like a miniature museum unique to Madrid.
Food and drink are available at the GastroVía 61, the hotel's restaurant, with a menu inspired by local produce and recipes, which also has a private lounge, Verbena, to host private events or celebrations. Or if you fancy sipping a glass of vermouth or tucking into some hot chocolate and ‘churros’, you can check out the Bar Retiro, which overlooks a vertical garden of preserved plants and a cascading fountain that will imbue you with thoughts of the purest nature.
