Stage Entertainment España presents a spectacular stage adaptation of the famous film by Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge!, which will be coming to Madrid in 2027 as the opening show of the new Stage Gran Teatro Musical.
The revolutionary film Moulin Rouge! (2001) directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor will be coming to life on stage, updated into a new and spectacular musical. Directed by Tony® Award winner, Alex Timbers, this musical is a theatrical celebration of Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love. With the libretto by the Tony® Award winner, John Logan; musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by the Tony® Award winner, Justin Levine; and choreography by the Tony® Award winner, Sonya Tayeh, Moulin Rouge! is more than a musical: it is a state of mind.
This acclaimed musical is now coming to Madrid thanks to Stage Entertainment Spain, the leading musical producer which is behind hits like The Lion King, Anastasia or Aladdin. It will be performed at the production company’s new venue, Stage Gran Teatro Musical, located in the former Imax cinema, which will have a seating capacity of 1,500. This new theatre will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology to hold the largest musical productions.
The musical celebrates more than 160 years of music, from Offenbach to Lady Gaga, and includes many of the iconic songs from the film, as well as incorporating hits released since its première 20 years ago.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical won ten Tony® Awards in 2021, including Best Musical, two Drama League Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical, five Drama Desk and ten honours at the Outer Critics Circle, including Best New Broadway Musical. It is one of the most successful Broadway musicals of the 21st century and was premièred on 29 July 2019 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where it holds the record for the highest-grossing production in the 100 years that the theatre has been open.
