This institution began life as the Archive of Public Deeds, created in 1765 by King Charles III for the purposes of collating the scattered records of deceased notaries, in the possession of communities and individuals. Today it houses the public deeds of Madrid, once they are 100 years old, making it an invaluable source when reconstructing the history of our city.
The usual headquarters of the Madrid Historical Archive of Notary Records, currently undergoing renovation, was located, up until 3 November 2015, at No. 4 Calle Alberto Bosch, occupying the building constructed for this purpose by the architect Joaquín de la Concha Mayor in 1886, at the request of the Ministry of Grace and Justice, fulfilling the requirements of a building of such characteristics: to be solid and fire resistant. For this purpose, granitic stone, brick and cast iron were used in its construction, which was decorated simply.
Since November 2015, the archive has been located in the buildings of the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid, located in the ‘El Aguila’ complex (c/ Ramírez de Prado, 3).
