In addition to an extensive rail network, Madrid also offers a special Medieval Train service (Saturdays 22 Apr, 6, 20 and 27 May, 3 and 10 Jun, 23 and 30 Sep, 7, 21 and 28 Oct and 4 and 11 Nov) that not only transports you to the enchanting city of Sigüenza but also sends you on a journey through time to the Middle Ages of the troubadours.

All Aboard!

Once you step on to the train, don’t be surprised if you lose all sense of time and direction. During the ride from Madrid Chamartín to Sigüenza, which takes just an hour and twenty minutes, you’ll be accompanied by jolly troubadours and heroic knights who use music and theatre to tell you about the history of the villages and towns that you pass by on your trip. And make sure your breakfast isn’t too big that morning because you’ll want to leave space for the delicious sweets and pastries that are handed out on the train!

Next stop: Sigüenza

Once you arrive, you will be met by guides who will split you into small groups and take you on a tour of the city’s main landmarks, including the Castle, the Cathedral, Plaza Mayor, Plazuela de la Cárcel square and the Casa de Doncel, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. You will have around 8 hours till your return train, giving you enough time to get to know city and try some traditional fare, such as migas (fried breadcrumbs with minced meat and vegetables), sopa castellana (Castilian garlic soup), asado de cabrito (roast kid goat), and the Yemas del Doncel (a dessert made from sweetened egg yolk). And be sure to keep an eye out, because a lot of establishments offer 10% discounts if you show them your Medieval Train ticket.
