Yesterday, the 2023 congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) came to a successful close in Madrid. This important international event for the medical oncology sector was attended by over 33,000 delegates and had a direct economic impact on the city of more than 60 million euros.

While this major professional event was being held, the Tourism Department provided its support by conducting a welcome campaign, via Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), for all attendees. The special welcome included videos screened in Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, flag banners around IFEMA and event signage in two metro stations (Nuevos Ministerios and Feria de Madrid).

This is the third time the ESMO congress has been held in the city of Madrid, which hosted it for the first time in 2014 and for the second in 2017, with an excellent outcome on both occasions. Madrid was also chosen to host the 2020 edition but it had to be postponed due to restrictions imposed during the pandemic. At the time, its organisers decided to reaffirm their commitment to and trust in the Spanish capital, and, as a result, the event was held again in the city from 20 to 24 October 2023. Bringing together doctors, researchers and other medical oncology professionals, this is the largest and highest-profile congress hosted by Madrid this year.

ESMO occupied 8 of the 10 main halls of IFEMA MADRID as well as its North Convention Centre, South Convention Centre and various rooms in the nearby Palacio Municipal building, where some of the agenda’s meetings were held. In parallel, the organisers also made the congress available in virtual format, which was chosen by 10% of the participants.

European Rotors 2023

Next month, the Spanish capital will host another important conference: European Rotors 2023. The largest vertical flight trade show in Europe and the second largest in the world will be shifting for the first time from its regular host country, Germany, and will be hosted by the city of Madrid from 27 to 30 November. Some 3,000 delegates are expected to attend the show, which will also be held at IFEMA MADRID./
