Madrid, the capital of Mars in November

From 3 to 5 November, the brightest young minds from around the world will gather in Madrid to shape the solutions that will transform the future of Earth and space exploration.

This is the final of the Mars Challenge, ‘The Grand Jam’, which will take place in Getafe.

Solving major challenges through a hackathon

For three days, Madrid will become the capital of Mars to host the international final of a hackathon aimed at young people who must think, decide and collaborate to solve major challenges facing Earth, whilst simulating the conditions of complexity, uncertainty and limited resources found on the planet Mars.

Eight countries, 25 teams and a shared challenge: finding solutions to problems currently affecting our planet Earth. How can we grow food where the soil is unsuitable for sustaining life? What if the materials we use for building could also help to restore the soil? How can we maintain a stable agricultural system when every drop of water and every change in the soil matters?

Alongside the young participants, who are already working on their projects, there will be teachers, academic leaders, institutions and key figures from various fields who will support them throughout the three-day event.

Earth Element

Each edition is linked to a different element; this year, The Grand Jam tackles challenges related to the earth element.

Soil, food, safe habitats, circularity, regeneration, resilience and the relationship between living systems are some of the topics that will be discussed, with solutions proposed – not so much for colonising Mars, but for saving the Earth.
