On 17 and 18 May, the Conde Duque Cultural Centre will host an artistic proposal created and designed by Ernesto Artillo from Malaga, an undisciplined artist who uses different artistic genres to short-circuit the identity of religion, social media, folklore, activism, etc. His latest transgressive creation takes an exact replica of the stage from the Corral de la Morería in Madrid to a venue devoted to developing performing arts and contemporary culture.
Having graduated in Advertising and Public Relations, Ernesto Artillo’s work moved towards photography and painting, ending up, logically, in the world of performance art and video creation. A man of many interests, he is an unclassifiable artist. As a living and unmistakable symbol of modernity, Artillo has often said that for him, the most interesting artistic expressions are found in folklore. Flamenco is one of his passions.
Tablao pays homage and tribute to the most popular, touristic and, at times, underrated form of flamenco: the flamenco house. His creation, which is halfway between an installation and a performance features live performances by prominent figures of the flamenco avant-garde, such as Niño de Elche, a regular collaborator in his projects, the acclaimed guitarist Yerai Cortés, the tempestuous presence of Rocío Molina and the non-conformist and highly personal creator and dancer Andrés Marín, recently awarded the National Dance Prize.
Artillo, who quite literally inserts a flamenco house into a venue devoted to developing performing arts and contemporary culture. It is a metaphorical transfer that brings an exact replica of the stage of the Corral de la Morería in Madrid, which has been the flagship and international standard-bearer of the flamenco house since 1956, to these cultural institutions.
The installation offers multifaceted readings of the cultured and the popular, the artistic and the commercial, the modern and the traditional, the role of the performance space and of flamenco itself and its ability to evolve in song, guitar and dance, with the presence of today’s most innovative and groundbreaking flamenco artists, who are seen performing in a museum but are installed in a replica of a space that has been a pillar of tradition.
