The Botanical Garden at the Complutense University (Alfonso XIII Royal Botanical Garden) will host the performance of the New York group led by the singer and pianist, Anohni Hegarty, on 18 June as part of the Nights at the Botanical Festival.
Born in the United Kingdom, Anohni moved to New York as a teenager, where she set up the group called The Johnsons in 1998, establishing a unique path as an artist focusing on animist and eco-feminist themes. Her musical approach covers several genres, ranging from electronic experimentation to avant-classical, dance and soul.
They rose to fame in 2005 with I Am a Bird Now, for which they won a United Kingdom Mercury Award. They went on to release other albums, such as The Crying Light (2009) and Swanlights (2010) and live albums like Cut The World (2012) and TURNING (2014). HOPELESSNESS, produced by Hudson Mohawke and Daniel Lopatin, was released in 2016 and was named one of the Top 10 albums of the year by the New York Times.
In this concert, the artist and her group will present their sixth studio album, My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross (2023), in which they continue to examine social structures, spirituality and our relationship with the biosphere. On this latest tour, she will be accompanied on stage by nine musicians, including Julia Kent (cello), Maxim Moston (violin), Doug Wieselman (multi-instrumentalist), Gael Rakotondrabe (piano), Leo Abrahams (guitarist) and Jimmy Hogarth (guitarist/producer).
