From 5 March to 26 May, the temporary exhibition hall at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum will host this exhibition which has been organised in conjunction with the TBA21 Foundation, featuring the work of the Philippine-Canadian artist, Stephanie Comilang (Toronto, 1980).
The artist’s first solo exhibition is made up of a two-channel video installation, carried out in conjunction with the Sharjah Biennial, and several embroidered textile pieces made of pineapple fibre, a traditional Philippine weave. The artist’s relationship with the ocean and the organisms that inhabit it is present in them.
Through a genre she refers to as "science fiction documentary", Comilang creates films whose narratives are driven by diverse voices and points of view that consider how culture and society engage with different aspects of the globalised world, such as mobility, capital and labour. Often combining film and augmented reality, the artist puts the viewer in the shoes of migrant communities, proposing a different reading of nature, marked by colonial exploitation, and also of rituals, enablers of a new beginning.
