The greatest reference of her generation in flamenco dance is premièring Romancero del Baile Flamenco in Madrid. The Red Hall (Sala Roja) at Teatros del Canal is hosting this event on 27 April, in which the flamenco dancer is accompanied on stage by artists of the likes of Santiago Lara as the solo guitarist.
Mercedes Ruiz was born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1980 and her commitment to the evolution of the classism of flamenco dance gave her a place in the flamenco world. She began her training at the age of 4 with Ana María López and later with Chiqui de Jerez, Charo Cruz and at the Seville Conservatory. Three years later, she was working in the Manuel Morao and Gitanos de Jerez Company on Broadway. The Jury of the 16th Cordoba National Competition granted her the Antonio Gades Award in 2001.
In 2002, Mercedes Ruiz embarked on her solo career. In the same year, she won the Young Artists Award at the Seville Biennial, along with Andrés Marín. This Award led her to set up her own Company in 2003, premièring her first show, Dibujos en el Aire, at the Jerez Festival.
Mercedes’ international projection was absolute with her fourth proposal, Mi Último Secreto, which she performed at the prestigious Montpellier Danse Festival. In April 2018, she premièred Tauromagia, a choreography for Manolo Sanlúcar’s show at the Cusset Theatre (France).
