Ondina Maldonado and Ferrán Carvajal première a show in Spain from 28 May to 2 June in the Black Hall (Sala Negra) at Teatros del Canal that invites gender to be reconsidered and a fairer and more inclusive society to be built. The performance includes full nudity and uses strobe lights.
It is a show that breaks down the boundaries of performing arts to explore the deconstruction of gender and the visibility of non-binary identities. Dance, music and words are merged in order to create a sensorial experience around what is personal and universal.
The starting point is Ondina Maldonado’s own experience in her gender transition process. Through her experiences, she reflects on the social and cultural structures that still limit the free expression of identity, posing questions like: What does it mean to be a man or a woman?, What roles are assigned to us by social norms according to our gender?
The production is not only a theatre play, but also a tool for activism. By representing non-binary bodies on stage, it seeks to challenge the existing prejudices around this issue and to encourage empathy and understanding in society.
