Gabriel Olivares and José Félix Romero direct this adaptation of this show that won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show opens at the Gran Teatro CaixaBank Príncipe Pío from 3 May to 2 June 2024 with performances from Friday to Sunday.
The play is a combination of puppets and actors that tell the story of a group of characters living in a fictitious neighbourhood in New York (United States). The play deals with issues such as racism, drugs, homosexuality, politics and pornography. Although puppets are used, the content of the musical is mainly for adults, as it includes humour and narrative situations that are not suitable for children.
Its plot introduces Princeton, a young graduate who is seeking to fulfil his dreams so he moves to Avenue Q, a neighbourhood where he comes across an amazing range of characters. Throughout the story, the main characters face challenges, explore their relationships and learn valuable life lessons. The play stands out for its comedic style, its satirical approach to society and its mix of puppets and actors, inspired by Sesame Street.
It was created by Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty and premièred Off-Broadway in 2003, before moving onto Broadway in July of the same year. In addition to Broadway and London's West End, the show has been seen in countries such as Israel, Mexico, Brazil, France, Sweden, Finland, Singapore, Germany and Canada.
