The work of Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm (1918-2002) features in this extensive retrospective that can be seen at the Mapfre Foundation's Sala Recoletos from 2 February to 5 May 2024.
Strömholm captured his surroundings in black and white images that showcased his integrity, his discreet humour and an absolutely personal aesthetic. With his unmistakable sensitivity to human suffering, based on his personal experience, he took photography in a new direction.
The exhibition consists of one hundred and fifty photographs, almost all of which are vintage prints and old exhibition prints, with additional archive material. The exhibition covers all the key moments in his extraordinary work, from his participation in the German "Fotoform" group in the early 1950s to the assemblages of objects that had been found in his final period, as well as his many travels around the world, his street photography and his portraits of artists.
