Born in Algeciras in 1947, the guitarist and composer Francisco Sánchez Gómez, best known as Paco de Lucía, is considered to be the best flamenco musician and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He began his career at the 1962 Jerez de la Frontera International Flamenco Art Contest and recorded his earliest albums with his brother Pepe de Lucía, as part of the group Los Chiquitos de Algeciras. Soon after, he moved on to perform with such flamenco stars as Fosforito, El Lebrijano and Camarón de la Isla.
He’d already risen to fame when he branched into jazz, bossa nova and classical music, sharing the stage with the likes of Carlos Santana, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin. Paco de Lucía was the recipient of a long list of awards, including the National Flamenco Guitar Prize in 2014, the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts in 2014 and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 2004. He died in Mexico in 2014, at the age of 66.
