Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky created one of the most beautiful works of universal dance in 1892 with The Nutcracker. It is an ideal fairy tale for children and adults alike that the Cuban National Ballet performs with an amazing stage design and directed by the much acclaimed Alicia Alonso.
Through a children’s tale in which a girl’s toys start to come to life to take her on fantastic adventures, this ballet symbolises a fable about childhood memories and the dream world. It is a performance that has become a Christmas classic since its debut thanks to the beauty of its choreography and the timelessness of its story.
Its plot is based on Alejandro Dumas senior’s adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffman and on which Marius Petipa and Lev Ivánov later structured into two dance acts.
Alicia Alonso has performed this ballet at the American Ballet Theatre and the Russian Ballets of Montecarlo, where it was originally taken by the maestros of the old Russian school, such as Nikolai Sergueiev and Alexandra Fedórova.
