Soledad Sevilla. Rhythms, Grids, Variables

From 25 September to 10 March 2025, the Nouvel Building (first floor) of the Reina Sofía Museum is hosting an exhibition focused on the work of Valencian painter Soledad Sevilla, from her earliest pieces to her current work, some made specifically for this exhibition.

Curated by Isabel Tejeda, with the coordination of María del Castillo Cabeza, this exhibition on Soledad Sevilla (Valencia, Spain, 1944) includes a hundred pieces, ranging from her early work in the UCM Calculus Centre to her current productions.

Linked since the start of her career to the heterogeneous group of Spanish artists affiliated to the aesthetic assumptions of geometric abstraction, she has developed a rigorous language based on the purity of line and colour, as well as the construction of shapes from geometric modules. Throughout her life, she has maintained a deep affinity with this group of artists.

The retrospective exhibition delves into the artist’s fundamental assertion that she has painted the same painting her whole life. It connects her earliest works from the 1960s with her latest series such as Horizontes Blancos and Sempere, where she pays tribute to her mentor and friend Eusebio Sempere. Lines, patterns and light, as vehicles of emotion, led her in the 1980s to work on two milestones of Spanish culture. Hanging vegetations, sleepless nights and agricultural architectures invite us to look at the world through patterns.
