The acclaimed American vocalist and songwriter, Lizz Wright, will be performing on 20 November in the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa as part of JAZZMADRID25. Madrid International Jazz Festival. With a professional career spanning 20 years, the artist will present tracks from her latest album, Shadow, released in 2024.
Wright rose to fame on the national scene at the age of 22 thanks to a tribute to Billie Holiday and she signed with Verve Records when she was 23 to release her debut album, Salt (2003), which went to the top of Billboard's contemporary jazz charts. Under Universal Music Group, she went on to release Dreaming Wide Awake (2005) and Fellowship (2010) with pieces by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Gladys Knight, Joan Wasser, and Joan as Police Woman.
In 2015, she released Freedom & Surrender in which she shows off her talent as a composer, with tracks like Lean In, River Man, by Nick Drake or To Love Somebody by the Bee Gees, and in 2017, she published her album, Grace.
In 2024, Wright is presenting her latest studio album, Shadow, which has been produced by Chris Bruce and released on Blues & Greens Records. With five original tracks, the album features major collaborations with Angelique Kidjo and Meshell Ndegeocello, as well as a musical experience in which acoustic guitars, string quartets and deep emotional expression stand out.
In her music, Lizz Wright delves into the depths of gospel, folk and blues, with a unique melting pot of mixes, the richness of her voice, control, sensitivity and the insight that she shows in her performances.
