The European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) has chosen Madrid to host its first annual congress in the 2021 edition. This international meeting is expected to bring together more than 6,000 delegates and professionals in radiotherapy oncology, from doctors to therapists and nurses.
The purpose of ESTRO - an association of more than 7,000 radiotherapy professionals in more than 100 countries - is to position the discipline appropriately within the multidisciplinary environment, in cancer care policies and models, and to increase awareness of the value of radiotherapy for the benefit of patients.
One of the most outstanding aspects of holding the ESTRO congress in Madrid is the knowledge it generates during its celebration. Dissemination and training actions will be implemented from 2020, so that citizens and the medical sector in Madrid can participate and benefit from the knowledge.
It is estimated that the celebration in the city of this congress will have an economic impact in excess of 15 million euros in direct expenditure and will generate some 36,000 overnight stays. To this should be added the economic impact derived from all the parallel meetings to the congress organized by the medical and laboratory sectors.
The ESTRO congress confirms Madrid as a key city in the celebration of international fairs and events, especially those related to the health sector. This meeting will take place only a few months before the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), which will return to Madrid for the third time. Other meetings based in Madrid are those of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR), the European Respiratory Society (ERS) or the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV).
