Another Renaissance. Spanish artists in Naples in the early Cinquecento

From 18 October to 29 January, the Prado Museum together with the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte museum in Naples will be organising an exhibition devoted to the great artists of the early Iberian Renaissance.

The exhibition is curated by Andrea Zezza of the Universita degli Studi della Campania and Riccardo Naldi of the Universita degli Studi Napoli "L’Orientale" with the collaboration of Manuel Arias of the Prado Museum and sponsored by Fundación BBVA.

It focuses on the period of nearly 30 years from 1504 to 1535, which saw the artistic revolution that began in Rome with Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael, which the architect and painter Giorgio Vasari called the maniera moderna. These innovations in artistic technique spread rapidly throughout the Italian peninsula and were reinterpreted in Spanish Naples by artists such as Pedro Fernández, Bartolomé Ordonez, Diego de Siloe, Pedro Machuca and perhaps also Alonso Berruguet.

This exhibition explores how Naples became a place devoted particularly to the development of artistic models that contributed to the definition, in the early cinquecento, of a particular Iberian lilt in the language of the Renaissance, in addition to the creation of an autonomous local school with its own characteristics.
