Welcome to Madrid
San Fernando market, one of the five markets in Madrid's Centro district, has stood in one of Madrid's most characteristic urban spaces since1944, very near the old Pious Schools (today home to the National Distance Education University), the Corrala de Sombrerete and the Casino de la Reina park.
The surrounding area has undergone an ambitious urban rehabilitation programme since 1998. The façade of the building is its most original feature and gives it a unique character among the city's markets, surprising visitors when they discover a municipal market behind the magnificent entrance.
As well as the fresh food normally sold in municipal markets you can buy a wide range of other products, ranging from clothes to the books on sale in the charming newly-opened bookshop. The Lavapiés Health Centre is also to be found inside the building and the first floor is currently being refurbished so that a modern restaurant can be opened there.
