Benito Pérez Galdós Public Library

This library is part of the Conde Duque space, the former headquarters of the Royal Guard of King Felipe V – by Pedro Ribera- which dates back to the end of 1717. It was opened to the public in 1990 and was reopened after the complete refurbishment of the building in 2011.

The Conde Duque Public Library is located in the North courtyard and boasts a surface area of 5,870 m², divided into two floors. After the refurbishment works, the previous space consisting of a reading room and a borrowing area, was extended to include a children’s room, a periodicals room and an Internet consultation area, with a Wi-Fi network throughout the facilities.

The library has 26 Internet stations and collections of 60,000 books, 12,000 titles of multimedia material, 60 titles of journals and eight daily newspapers.

Known until October 2019 as the Conde Duque Municipal Public Library, the centre has changed its name to Benito Pérez Galdós Public Library. This change of name is part of the acts in tribute to the writer from the Canary Islands, one of the best authors of Spanish literature and a great chronicler of 19th century Madrid, on the centenary of his death.
