Embark on this wonderful 50-minute ride to one of the most stunning sites in the Region of Madrid.

Just 60Km northwest of the city of Madrid, at the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, lies one of the region's most treasured gems: the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Located in a wonderful natural setting, the magnificent structure built by King Philip II reflects both the king’s austere nature and the strength of his religious devotion..

You can get to El Escorial by car or public transport, but one of the most enjoyable ways of travellig there is on the Philip II Train. A vintage train whose carriages and locomotive date back to the 1940s and 1960s, respectively, on board you'll be joined by conductors in period costumes who will make you feel like you're in ‘the empire where the sun never sets’.

Once you get to El Escorial you can visit the Monastery – a masterpiece of Herrerian architecture – and other landmarks: the Casas de Oficios (Trade Houses), the Casita del Príncipe (Residence of the Prince), the Casa de Infantes (Infants’ House) and the Coliseo de Carlos III Teatro Real. Take a stroll around the town and be dazzled by the architectural splendour of that era.
