MADRID WELCOMES A NEW CULTURAL ENCLAVE

This year's Veranos de la Villa Festival will be staged outdoors, just like the other twenty three previous editions. In 2009, we will be following in the wake of other large cities that use their parks and other typical and famous landmarks to stage similar cultural events: Central Park in New York, Hyde Park in London or the magnificent parks in Berlin and Chicago.

This year's edition of the Festival welcomes a new space with excellent environmental qualities, which is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers stunning panoramic views of Madrid from the cornice of the Royal Palace over the Campo del Moro. We have christened this space Escenario Puerta del Ángel, given the spectacular vistas of Monumental Madrid.

The geographical location of the Escenario Puerta del Ángel in the Casa de Campo guarantees not only fast, easy and quick access to public transport for Madrid's citizens, from all the neighbourhoods in the capital, but also easy access from populations in the South, like Alcorcón, Móstoles, Leganés, Fuenlabrada and Getafe. The Puerta del Ángel underground entrance, on line 6, links and connects the southern districts of the city to the venue, and is barely 200 m away from the entrance; the Lago underground entrance, which connects to the Metrosur network, is located merely 250 m away approximately; and Príncipe Pío is just 550 m away, a pleasant stroll crossing river Manzanares and bordering the Casa de Campo. For those travelling from localities that are not connected to Madrid's public transport network, there are plenty of parking spaces for private vehicles.

The town planning development carried out on the banks of river Manzanares has substantially improved the urban environment of this area of the Casa de Campo, by renovating the Avenida de Portugal and La Huerta de La Partida. The process will end with the developments currently underway around the Puente del Rey. What seemed impossible four years ago is now a reality. Madrid has created a new green area for its citizens to enjoy. An area that, thanks to El Balcón de Madrid (Madrid's Balcony) will also be transformed and will accommodate new cultural facilities. The utopia has come to life.

The vast space, spreading out over 14,000.00 m2, has allowed us to improve the seating space to accommodate 550 more viewers (300 more in the standing area and 220 more in the stalls), a taller and wider stage (4 metres have been added between the walls, plus it’s now 2 metres wider and 1.5 metres higher) thus suiting the space to shows requiring greater technical and artistic complexity.

This brief presentation of the Escenario Puerta del Ángel culminates with us inviting viewers to visit this newly created space, and to fill it with the warmth that is so necessary and vital for any theatrical performance. We hope to see you soon at the Escenario Puerta del Ángel in Casa de Campo.

HOW TO GET THERE

Over the summer, certain stops on Line 6 will be closed due to construction work. We recommend you either get off at Lago on Line 10 (which is only 7 minutes’ walk away) or use the bus.

- Get off at Lago, and walk down Paseo de la Puerta del Ángel to Avda. de Portugal.
- Get off at Puerta del Ángel, walk down down Calle San Crispín and Calle Concierto and cross Avda. de Portugal.
