Based on the tragedies of Seneca, Titus Andronicus was the first - and the most violent - in a series of plays (Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra) in which Shakespeare revived classical Roman tales and gave them an Elizabethan makeover before taking them on stage to delight his audiences.
