The Opera Cómica de Madrid presents a show that includes two extremely popular titles from the so-called ‘theatre by the hour’, more commonly known as ‘Genre chico’ (literally, little genre, a form of zarzuela, or Spanish operetta). First is El Año Pasado Por Agua (The Year Under Water), one of the main contributions by the brilliant Chueca to the “revue of today’. The peculiarity of this type of play spurred an updating of their libretto to preserve the lightly critical spirit that characterises them. The programme then finishes with La Revoltosa (The Rebel Girl), a type of Madrid-based sainete (one-act farce) and one of the cornerstones of Spanish lyrical theatre. The combination of both offers a complementary vision of the Madrid that knew how to put on a brave face in view of poor weather, either social or meteorological.
