Flamenco Today by Carlos Saura is a formidable exhibition of this Andalusian genre, with interplay of instruments, echoing voices and the silhouettes of dancing bodies.
The magic is provided by the skill of the performers, magnificent, youthful and fascinating artists. It is structured as a compendium, a coherent anthology of flamenco's historical repertoire that touches on other similar musical forms from Spain and the rest of the world. This full-bodied display of deeply-rooted tradition is based on discipline and the spark that dazzles and moves.
Nanas, Sevillanas and Triana Tangos, Peteneras, Farrucas and Saetas, Fandangos, Guajiras and Malagueñas, Seguiriyas, Solares and Zambras, Alegrías, Bulerías and Rumbas narrate the poem of what is played, sung and danced.
The performance is also a remembrance, a tribute to Antonio Gades, to Caracol and to Mairena on his centennial. Andalusí culture - the enchanted magic of the East - makes an appearance here. It follows in the footsteps of Antonia Mercé dancing Granados and shocking leaps of Carmen La del Titi. And there is even room for a good old sensual pasodoble, an intertwined caress. The audience can recognize different territories: Triana, Malaga, Jerez, Cadiz, Lebrija and blessed Alonso. Darkness, gypsy magic rears its head and fuses with jazz….
Each form has its figuration and different colors. Springing from a foundation of knowledge, respect and the desire to create something new are made evident, because this is the will of flamenco: freely given, moving from convention to defiance, from the old and hackneyed to the contemporary, from tradition to the avant-garde, classic and plebian.
