"The Merchant of Venice" , which critics have labeled a romantic comedy, was written shortly before 1598. It was first performed in 1600, and 5 years later the acting troupe of King James I offered him a personal performance which delighted him so immensely that he asked to see it again two days later.
Like all comedies, a love story is at the heart of this play. Here there is also a secondary drama, equally amorous and perhaps even more romantic, played out between the Jewish merchant's daughter and Lorenzo.
