Cosme Pérez was an 18th-century actor who became famous for his performance in the role of Juan Rana (the queen awarded him a lifetime annuity "for making her laugh"). "The Song of the Frog" is a "dialogued monologue", a humorous reflection on the life of the actor and the futility of fame.
