Madrid Emprende   -   15 de octubre de 2009   -  Biotechnology

Over the next three years, this subsidiary will invest €2 million in research and development into new medicines to treat diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Laboratorios Silanes was founded in Mexico in 1943 by the Spanish expat Antonio López de Silanes (1915-1996), a native of La Rioja. The company is currently in its second generation, under the leadership of Chairman and CEO Antonio López de Silanes, son of the founder and a native of the La Rioja town of Cellorigo.

Today, Laboratorios Silanes offers over one hundred medicines and produces 40 million finished products per year.In Mexico, the laboratory is the leading manufacturer of oral diabetes medicines, with production of 1,300 tablets. This allows it to meet the day-to-day needs of over one million patients coping with Type 2 diabetes in Mexico, Central America and South America.According to the Chairman, the company decided to base its new Spanish subsidiary in Madrid in order to create a research and development (R&D) centre serving as a springboard for further expansion in Europe and other areas of the world.Madrid will also be the stage for the clinical trials Laboratorios Silanes’ Pharmaceutical Research and Development intends to conduct on four own molecules for treatment of metabolic-related illnesses, in strict compliance with European Medicines Agency (EMEA) standards.
