More than half a century has passed since Berlanga presented his film Welcome Mr. Marshall and, since then, things have changed - or have they? La Terremoto de Alcorcón and Las Diabéticas Aceleradas offer a festive performance that recreates a modern vision of this Spanish film classic, coaxing the characters off the silver screen and evoking the festive atmosphere of the town in the film as a prelude to the arrival of the G-20. They will be accompanied by eleven actors, extras and a music band, dressed in black and white to underscore the fact that they have "escaped" from the film, on a parade that will fill the streets with joy and a "feel-good" atmosphere and make us wonder if we are really "as modern as we think".
After a screening of the film in Plaza de Oriente, the actors will organize a parade with the music band along Calle Bailén to the Plaza de la Villa where a speaker will address the citizens from a municipal balcony. This speaker will also offer the people a chance to formulate a request to put to the G-20, just as the townspeople in Berlanga's movie did. From there, the welcome committee will move on to the Plaza del Conde de Barajas, where the scene in which the American motorcade roars through the town without even stopping will be shown. Afterwards, the audience will be given stiff-brimmed hats, pennants and posters and a massive party will ensue, even though the Americans ignored them. Because life goes on, and if we have a bit of music, so much the better.
La Terremoto de Alcorcón (Pepa Charro) began her career with the Majorcan group Diabéticas Aceleradas. Her alias, La Terremoto de Alcorcón (The Alcorcón Earthquake) has brought her international fame, and her version of Madonna's hit song Hung Up became a veritable social phenomenon, making her the star of the show at the opening night festivities for Pedro Almodóvar's film Volver.
