The Vienna State Ballet, or Wiener Staatsballett, are coming to Madrid to stage Le Corsaire, with music by French composer Adolphe Adam and a libretto loosely based on the poem ‘The Corsair’ by Lord Byron. A beautiful ballet staging, with the resident orchestra at Teatro Real.
The corsair Conrad and his friends, Birbanto and Ali, go shipwreck in a tempest and land on a beach off the Ionian Sea. They are found and helped by local women Medora and Gulnare.
As soon as he catches sight of Medora, Conrad falls in love. But she and other women fall into the hands of Lankendem, a slave trader. They are rescued by Conrad, but Gulnare has been sold to the pasha Seid.
Medora tries to talk Conrad away from his buccaneer life and into setting the women free, but his friends do not agree: they want to trade them for money. So Birbanto reaches a deal with Lankendem to get rid of Conrad and lay hands on the girls.
