The Teatro Real opera house is staging El gato con botas, an opera for children and grown-ups based on the classic tale by French author Charles Perrault (1628-1703) and composed by Catalan musician Xavier Montsalvatge (1912-2002).
El gato con botas is a one-act, five-scene opera for a soprano, a tenor, a baritone, a mezzosoprano and a bass. The score is colourful and harmonious – a perfect match to the story of the clever cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand of a princess in marriage for his penniless and low-born master.
