The Prado Museum Prado is exhibiting the seven unique pieces by the Galician sculptor and architect which are outside the Porch of Glory at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral for the first time ever. The sculptures, preserved in the temple itself and in different institutions and collections, will be exhibited alongside other smaller pieces and documents.
These natural sized sculptures are divided between public and private institutions: two of which can be found at the Pontevedra Provincial Museum, a further two at the Cathedral Foundation and another three are in the hands of private collectors. These pieces include David and Salomon, which can be seen on the Obradoiro façade; Abraham and Isaac, from a private collection; and Enoch and Elijah housed in the Pontevedra Museum, dating from 1188 and 1211.
Thanks to the collaboration of the Regional Government of Galicia and in conjunction with the Galicia Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Santiago Cathedral Foundation, the national art gallery has organised this exhibition which aims to highlight the work of Master Mateo (c. 1150 – c.1200~1217) in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.
