Curlew River is a concert opera that is premiering in Madrid thanks to the Teatro Real Opera House Choir and Orchestra. A spectacular drama by Benjamin Britten (Lowestoft, UK, 1913 - Aldeburgh, UK, 1976) based on the play Sumidagawa by Japanese playwright Juro Motomasa.
This parable, to be performed in church, represented a radical distancing in the style of the British composer, giving rise to other renowned works such as Death in Venice and Owen Wingrave.
Britten based his story on a Noh play he saw during a visit to Japan. It tells the story of the desperate search of a crazed woman who lost her son a year ago. All the characters are played by male singers, accompanied by a modest instrumental ensemble.
