To celebrate its 80th anniversary, the Ballet Nacional de Sodre-Uruguay is performing Coppélia, a traditional ballet based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
Directed by Julio Bocca (Munro, Argentina, 1967), the piece is influenced by the folklore of various Eastern European cultures. All accompanied by beautiful staging and stunning costumes made by José Varona.
The story takes us to a small village at the foot of the mountains, home to the mischievous Swanilda, her beau, Franz and the toymaker Coppelius. One day, Swanilda breaks into Coppelius' home with her friends to see his creations, which include life size dolls.
Swanilda decides to replace Coppélia, the toymaker's favourite doll, and when he returns, he sees how his greatest masterpiece has come to life.
