TRADItion

Tradition is an essential part of life in young cities, for folklore provides yet another prism into the future. Flamenco, zarzuela (or Spanish operetta) and bullfighting are present even in Madrid's most avant-garde events. Traditions are passed on from generation to generation, and are part of the lives of any city's residents. In Madrid, taking a walk in El Rastro flea market, going to a bullfight, attending a procession, going to watch a zarzuela and taking part in public debates are traditions so deep-rooted that it's hard to figure out quite when they date back to.

Bullfighting in Madrid
BULLFIGHTING
The Madrid bullfighting season is among the most important in the world. From March to October, Plaza de las Ventas becomes home to corridas or bullfights starring the top matadors. In May festivities are organised daily, during the San Isidro Fair. Before you attend a corrida, read about some aspects of this tradition.
El Rastro Flea Market
EL RASTRO FLEA MARKET
Come rain or shine, Madrid's biggest flea market is held every Sunday morning. Some of the city centre's roads are closed to traffic on the day, filling up with stalls at which you can buy antiques from past centuries and cheap, peculiar little nothings. Come and buy rarities and artisan and second-hand objects, or do something different and exchange stickers. Everything is possible in El Rastro.
Flamenco in Madrid
FLAMENCO
Flamenco is one of the symbols most closely associated to our country, and there's no choice but to surrender to its beauty. Bailaoras (dancers), cantaores (singers), palmeros (those who accompany the artists with rhymical clapping) and guitarists showcase their talent at several tablaos (flamenco venues) and bars that you can find all over Madrid.
