José de Murga and Raimunda de Osorio, Marquises of Linares, commissioned works on their palace to municipal architect Carlos Colubí in 1877, fundamentally following designs by French architect Adolf Ombrecht. Some parts of Linares palace, such as the marble staircase that leads to the garden, the stables and the famous Dolls House, were the work of Manuel Aníbal Álvarez. The Marquises of Linares moved to the building in 1884, although works were not completely finished until 1900.
Located on Plaza de Cibeles, the palace has four floors and a basement, which extends throughout the length and width of the stables and garden. The building is characterised by beautiful workmanship and the quality of the materials used, as can be appreciated through the magnificent main staircase, which connects the mezzanine to the main floor, produced in blocks of Carrara marble, and in the second-floor galleries, oil-painted with Pompeian motifs.
The décor has diverse sources of inspiration, passing through luxurious Luis XV and Luis XVI designs, to the pompous Rococo and the sober Luis Felipe styles. All of the rooms are decorated with exquisite taste: tapestries from the Gobelins Manufactory, ceilings abounding with gilding and mythological paintings, floors made of exotic word, French lamps, rugs from the Royal Tapestry Factory, Chinese silks for the Oriental room, diverse panels decorated with rich embroidered materials and more. Since 1992, the palace has been the headquarters of the Casa de América, which promotes awareness between Spain and Latin America.
