Naves del Español is a very useful space for all kinds of theatrical production, as its 5,900 m2, distributed in three units, allows great flexibility. The area for spectators, the stage and the stage machinery have been designed so that different configurations are possible, ranging from conventional theatre to more adventurous productions.
This versatility and the combination of the philosophy of the Matadero complex with that of Teatro Español allow Naves del Español to make a significant contribution to research into the performing arts.
Unit 12 acts as the foyer or entrance hall for the whole space. It contains a reception area and cafeteria plus a section for small-scale performances. Unit 11 contains the main performing area and has a very flexible, versatile layout. Unit 10, which was opened in 2010, contains Sala 2, an area for drama teaching and rehearsal.
