Founded in 1965 by Swedish entrepreneur Bertil Hult, EF is a private company with 15 divisions offering a wide range of educational programmes, from language courses to cultural trips and exchanges. It has 500 schools and offices in over 50 countries.
When Bertil Hult founded EF, it was based on the idea that cultural immersion provided a better way to learn a language. EF offers language courses in other countries for students aged 16 and above. They last from 2 to 52 weeks and there is a choice of 40 schools in 15 countries. The curriculum is based on the exclusive EF Efekta system, which combines conventional teaching with technology to speed learning.
The EF Corporate Language Training programme is aimed at businesses, institutions and executives, combining on-line or face-to-face tuition with language immersion in another country. There is also a programme for cultural exchanges allowing participants to live abroad with a family while they study. This includes the 'au pair' option, where the student looks after the family's children.
