Right in the heart of Madrid, young people can enjoy their stay at one of the most modern youth hostels
Since 2007, Madrid has a municipal youth hostel. Thanks to its prime location, on Calle Mejía Lequerica, and its modern facilities, this hostel has become one of the best in Europe and a perfect spot for national and international tourists.
Madrid has a municipal youth hostel in the heart of the cultural and entertainment area in the capital. The building where it is located is a refurbished former administration building and has an area of 5,200m2. Furthermore, it includes a drama school, serving the ever-growing demand for these courses, and a children's school, increasing this neighbourhood's appeal for younger families.
The hostel has an area of 2,148 m2 split in four levels, fits 122 people and has a total of 25 spacious rooms sleeping four and six people, including two special ones for visitors with disabilities. All of these rooms are equipped with bunk beds, individual reading lamps, heating, AC, full bathroom, lockers with security locks and door with magnetic card access.
There is a 24-hour reception desk where visitors can get all the tourist and cultural information of the city, as well as having access to the daily press. The hostel's facilities are completed with a dining area for breakfast, where guests will find dishware and a microwave for their use, and a living room with a TV and a pool table, decorated with graffiti by the artist awarded the first prize in the 2007 Young Creators' Contest in this category.
There is also a multimedia room with six computers including free wireless Internet access, a cycling room with exercise bikes and mats to stay in shape, and a laundry room with washer, drier and an iron, which visitors can access for 3 euros. Furthermore, on the ground floor there are two exhibition rooms. In the first one, at present, there is a show from the ‘Victoria Kent' Social Integration Centre on display, and the second one will soon hold young creators' work.
The maximum stay is seven days, although it can be extended based on demand and occupation. The rate per night is 18.92 euros for visitors under 25; 20.24 euros for 25-year-old visitors and 24.75 euros for everyone else. In both cases, bed linen and breakfast are included. Also, there is an optional towel rental service for 3 euros, and every day, from 8pm to 1am there is an entertainment manager included in the service, who organizes different leisure and sports activities.
During the hostel's short life, there is already a trend when it comes to the guests' nationalities. Spaniards, Mexicans, French, Argentineans, Americans, Brazilians and Italians, in this order, have been making most of the reservations. In terms of age, most of them are younger, but, given its convenient central location, families with children also decide to stay there. Similarly, middle-schools and high-schools choose this hostel for their school-trips to Madrid, and for that reason, amongst the facilities, there are two larger rooms for teachers. Unmistakable for their names, after two emblematic streets in Madrid: Alcalá and Gran Vía.
