Tears of Eros

A two-part journey through the history of eroticism in Western art. The first half, entitled From Temptation to Sacrifice and staged at the Thyssen-Bornemisza, depicts the relationship between pain and pleasure. The second The Eternal Dream illustrates the similarities artists have seen between death and amorous ecstasy throughout history and will be hosted by the Fundación Caja Madrid. Both exhibitions will be displayed till January 31.

Untitled, 2004. James White.

Juan Bautista Maíno (1581-1649)

A maestro waiting to be discovered is how the Museo Nacional del Prado describes this 17th-century painter. In fact the museum hopes that this exhibition will indeed encourage the public to uncover this artist's work. Juan Bautista Maino is one of the best representatives of Spanish painting from that era. His oeuvre, rich in colour and filled with strong, contrasting dark and light colours, will be shown alongside canvases by Caravaggio, Reni, Greco and Velazquez allowing the visitor to compare Maino's work with that of other artists. From October 20 to January 17.
