2009 CALENDAR of EVENTS

Madrid boasts one of the most complete calendars of concerts, sports events and exhibitions in the world. Take a look at a selection for what is left of 2009, which we have drawn up for you at esMADRID.com.

Exhibitions

Madrid's exhibition calendar for this year kicked off with a retrospective devoted to the work of painter Francis Bacon and an open-air exhibition of Auguste Rodin's sculptures. The rest of the year will also be filled with a myriad of other unmissable exhibits.

  • Manolo Valdés (on till November 22. Paseo del Prado): an outdoor exhibition comprising some of the Valencian artist's best works.
  • Darwin's Evolution (on till January 10, 2010. Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales): A closer look at the intellectual world of Charles Darwin through personal items, documents and specimens from various museums around the world marks the bicentenary of his birth.
  • Lisette Model (on till January 10, 2010). Fundación Cultural Mapfre. Sala Azca): a selection of pictures from the Austrian photo journalist who portrays daily life in the big cities back in the 1940s.
  • Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) (on till January 10, 2010. Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza): an ambitious retrospective of the French painter, a contemporary of such artists as Manet and Degas, comprising 70 works from different musuems around the world.
  • Palladio the Architect (1508-1580) (on till January 17, 2010. CaixaForum Madrid): an exhibition that commemorates the fifth centenary of the birth of the Renaissance architect, comprising around 200 models and items from different museums and private collections in Spain.
  • Tears of Eros (on till January 31. Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza/Fundación Caja Madrid): an exhibition which revolves around the close relationship between sexual desire and the death instinct in the visual arts..
  • Juan Bautista Maíno (1851-1649) (on till January 31. Museo del Prado): Madrid's renowned museum dedicates a large retrospective to the painter from King Felipe IV's court.
  • Jan Van Eyck. Grisailles (from November 3 till January 31. Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza): Jan Van Eyck's Annunciation Diptych forms part of this exhibition that looks at the technique of grisaille through the history of art.

Concerts

Many great artists have already delighted audiences in Madrid this year: from Franz Ferdinand to Eagles and Oasis. Here, we offer a list of the great stars who will be coming to the capital before the end of this year.

  • Madrid Jazz Festival (November 4 to 28): the 26th edition of this event which every year features leading international jazz musicians.
  • Muse (November 28. Sports Palace): the punk band, renowned for their mind-blowing live concerts, are on tour to present The Resistance.
  • Marilyn Manson (December 3. Sports Palace): the American musician, Brian Hugh Warner's alter ego, is touring Europe to peform live tracks from his new album The High End of Low.
  • The Prodigy (December 4. Sports Palace): live performance by one of the most emblematic punk groups of the 90s.

Sports

Madrid lives and breathes sport, and throughout the year city hosts numerous sports events. These are some of the most important tournaments and competitions to look forward to this year:

  • Real Madrid (football)-Zurich (November 25. Santiago Bernabéu stadium): another unmissable match in the first stage of the Champions League.San Silvestre Vallecana
  • Real Madrid (basketball)-Armani Jeans Milano (November 26. Palacio Vistalegre Arena): this time, Ettore Messina's boys receive one of the leading teams in Italian basketball.
  • Real Madrid (basketball)-Khimki de Moscú (December 2. Palacio Vistalegre Arena): the last game the Real Madrid will play at home in this year's Euroleague.
  • Atlético de Madrid-Oporto (December 8. Vicente Calderón stadium): this match between Atlético and the Portuguese team brings to an end the participation of Madrid teams in the group stage of the Champions League. 
  • San Silvestre Vallecana (December 31): The city ushers out the year with a popular race that has one of the highest participation rates in the world.

On Stage

Madrid's theatre calendar not only boasts plays starring leading actors from across the globe but also top-class musicals and shows of classical music, opera and dance. These are just some of the performances you can enjoy this year: Autumn Festival

  • Autumn Festival 2009 (from November 4 to 29. Different venues): Madrid's stages offer a special extensive programme filled with dance, muisic, theatre and circus presented by some of the leading national and international companies.
  • Chicago (from November 27. Teatro Coliseum): Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse's musical, which first premiered in Broadway in 1975, is disembarking in Madrid. The story takes place in 1920s Chicago and revolves around Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two convicts who fight for the media's support hoping for both fame and freedom. This time the musical, which boasts six Tonys and one Grammy award, will be performed by an exclusively Spanish cast that promises to entertain us with the production's unforgettable numbers such All That Jazz.
  • Cecilia Bartoli (December 12. Teatro Real): The Italian mezzo soprano offers this recital with piano, the closing event for the Ellas Crean cultural festival, with a repertoire which includes works by Rossini, Donizetti, Viardot, García and Malibrán.

2010 Preview

Next year continues with array cultural events that are already included in the programmes of Madrid's theatres, museums and exhibition centres. These are some of the dates to jot down in your diary if you plan to visit our city in 2010.

  • Ben-Hur Live (January 1 and 2. Sports Palace): a spectacular Hollywood-style show that combines theatre and music.
  • 1874. The Birth of Impressionism (From January. Fundación Mapfre): works by such artists as Cézanne, Renoir, Degas, Pisarro and Sisley in an exhibition devoted to the Impressionist's early paintings.
  • The Flying Dutchman (January 12 to 28. Teatro Real): In cooperation with the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Madrid's coliseum presents a new adaptation of Richard Wagner's opera, whose libretto is based on the tale of the doomed ghost ship.
  • Madrid Fusión. 8th International Summit of Gastronomy (January 26 to 28. Palacio de Congresos de Madrid): the world's most prestigious chefs lead discussions and give master classes in this unique event.
  • Purgatorio (From February 12. Teatro Español): Viggo Mortensen takes to the stage in this psycho-thriller in which he co-stars with Emma Suárez.
  • ARCO. International Contemporary Art Fair (February 17 to 21. Feria de Madrid): Los Angeles will be the guest city of this yearly event in which galleries from all over the world exhibit the works of their leading artists.
  • The Cranberries (March 12. Palacio Vistalegre Arena): the Irish band, led by Dolores O'Riordan, reform for a world tour in which they will perform their greatest hits and present a selection of new songs.
  • (MF) Madrid Foto. 2nd International Photography Fair (May 12 to 16. Sports Palace): for its second edition, the fair presents a larger and more central venue which will welcome around 60 galleries specialised in contemporary and vintage photography.
  • Tokio Hotel (April 6. Sports Palace): the German group thrill their thousands of young fans with another live concert in the capital.
  • Mika (April 19. Sports Palace): the Lebanese-born singer, who leapt to fame with his debut album Life in Cartoon Motion, visits our city to perform the tracks from his new record The Boy Who Knew Too Much.
  • Champions League Final (May 22. Santiago Bernabéu stadium): Real Madrid's home ground will host the final of the most important team tournament in European football.
  • Rock in Rio (June 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12. Ciudad del Rock, Arganda del Rey): after its success last year, the festival which staged such renowned artists as Amy Winehouse and Shakira, is back in Madrid.
  • Mark Knopfler (July 29. Las Ventas bullring): the singer, composer and guitarist, former member of Dire Straits and the author of such legendary tracks as Sultans of Swing will be offering a live concert.
