The distinctive feature of this jazz venue is its Baroque interior, reminiscent of bars in the US during the Prohibition era. Live jazz music is usually the mainstay of their programme of live performances, along with blues, swing, salsa, African music, Brazilian music, reggae and even Flamenco. Its stage has hosted artists such as Lou Bennett, Pedro Iturralde, Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, Wallace Roney, Sonny Fortune, Bob Mover, Bill Saxton and Jimmy Ponder. Populart, founded and managed by Javier Pérez, keeps prices pitched at a level not normally found in European clubs of this calibre. Some of its live music shows are already included in Miguel Angel Chastang’s album “Live at Populart”, an initiative to promote partnerships between Spanish and American musicians.
