Different styles, different rhythms, different languages. The Madrid International Jazz Festival has become a must for fans of the genre. This year's event, the 28th edition, will take place from 2 November to 4 December.
The autumn's most eagerly awaited musical event will open with a performance by a new talent: young bassist Pablo Martín, from Vitoria, who will be appearing on 2 November with dancer Alfonso Losa in a display of jazz-flamenco fusion. Teatro Fernán Gómez will also be the setting for performances by leading musicians including Randy Weston, whose music is rooted in African traditions (Nov 5); Roy Haynes, the legendary drummer who played with Charlie Parker (Nov 15); Fred Hersch, one of today's most brilliant pianists (Nov 16); Lizz Wright, performing tracks by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Bob Marley (Nov 17); and the outstanding Silvia Pérez Cruz & Javier Colina Trío (Nov 19), playing the music which has brought them international success.
This new venue, with its excellent acoustics, will also host events as part of this year's festival, many of them combining jazz and Spanish rhythms. Conde Duque will be welcoming Las Migas, including new member Alba Carmona, who fits perfectly into the group's simple, arousing style (Nov 4); the powerful performer Abdón Alcaraz, who will be presenting his latest album Reikiavik (Nov 6); Celia Mur & Nono García, blending jazz with the Spanish copla (Nov 26); and Carmen París, accompanied on this occasion by Chilean saxophonist Melissa Aldana (Dec 3).
Anoushka Shankar opens the festival at Circo Price on the 15th with a subtle combination of Indian music, percussion and flamenco guitars. The theatre will also be staging performances by Rodrigo y Gabriela (Nov 17), Madeleine Peyroux (Nov 18) and guitarist Pat Metheny (Nov 21).
Away from these three stages, jazz lovers can also enjoy their favourite music. The San Juan Evangelista Jazz and Music Club will be celebrating its thirtieth anniversary by bringing together the talents of top musicians Pepe Habichuela and Dave Holland (Auditorio Nacional de Música, Nov 13). Californian Aloe Blacc will be appearing at Teatro Joy Eslava (Nov 7) and the Mediterranean sounds of the Jaume Vilaseca Quartet will be featured at the Teatro Lara (Nov 3). More jazz can be heard during the festival at 16 other venues, which will be offering Jazz con sabor a club every night.
