Madrid Half Marathon

On April 1, 2012, the Madrid Half Marathon will take over the city's main streets, starting and ending at the Retiro Park. Enock Kipchirchir Mitei from Kenya and Soud Frehiwat Goshu from Ethopia won the 2011 edition, finishing at 1 hour 2 minutes and 42 seconds, and 1 hour 13 minutes and 25 seconds respectively.

Last year, the race which is included in the International Association of Marathons and Distant Races' calendar beat its record of number of registrations (14,800) and of runners making it to the finish line (12,276). The Madrid Half Marathon is, without a doubt, the most renowned in Spain, and one of the most popular in Europe. Madrid Half-Marathon

Organised by the Marathon Sports Association, the Madrid Half Marathon is rather challenging because of the pronounced unevenness in the roads along the route. But the beauty of the scenery and the warmth of the city's inhabitants will no doubt help ease the difficulty. Starting and finishing in the beautiful Retiro Park (a stone's throw from the Prado Museum), the route mainly runs through the northern part of the city.

The 5km Madrid

If you are looking for an easier distance to run, you're in luck. This year the Marathon Sports Association is hosting the third edition of the 5km Madrid race, also on April 1 at the Retiro Park. Most of its route will run through the actual park.
